deacon purpose
Deacons promote the physical and spiritual welfare of the church. The activities of the Deacons ensure that the needs of the congregation are met, while allowing the pastors to focus on prayer and the ministry of God's Word.
biblical basis
Acts 6:1-4
1 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the Word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the Word. |
flock care
Deacons care for members in need of physical, spiritual, financial and situational help. They keep in contact with the flock by phone, by mail, through social media and through visitation. Deacons also work to strengthen the flock through camaraderie and more.
visitation
Deacons stay abreast of the needs of the congregation and ensure constant contact with the sick, the long term absent and the shut-ins. They are the hand of the Lord that reaches out into to the community. They are the face of the church to the lonely... the warm smile at your door.
widow care
The Deacons work to identify and assist widows and their needs. Deacons provide emotional and spiritual support during a widow's time of grief as well as situational support, such as providing meals and assisting with emergency maintenance.
membership drive
Deacons develop and implement methods to drive membership. They also work to identify potential members and provide visitation to them.
program innovation
The Deacons are responsible for imagining, developing and implementing innovative new programs for the good of the church.

A Deacon reads the scripture for the day during our morning church service, right before the Pastor delivers the sermon.

holy communion assistance
The Deacons prepare and assist the Pastors in serving the Lord's Supper.

How do I become a deacon?
I Timothy 3:8-13 sets forth the qualifications for a Deacon. In addition, a candidate must be 21 years old and have been an Active Member of this church for at least one full year. They must be of good report, having shown ability to conduct family and personal affairs as becomes a good steward. Having met these qualifications, a candidate may make a request to the Board of Pastors. If approved, the Board of Pastors will nominate the candidate to the church at the next business meeting. Deacons are confirmed by a majority vote of Active Members present. All Deacons serve at the discretion of the Board of Pastors.
